We all use the term ‘farmhouse’ all over the internet but what is farmhouse style? What makes a piece of furniture farmhouse? Is it just everything Joanna Gaines makes is farmhouse? Not quite!
Our design team at The Carolina Farmhouse would love to make the farmhouse-style term easier for you. When it comes to farmhouse style, it is really about a simpler, clean aesthetic in order to allow you to focus on what matters most.
The farmhouse style started in the 16th and 17th centuries when farmers had small farmhouses or shelters; these properties were made of readily available materials such as wood and stone. These materials were not only easy to access but also created comfortable spaces with plenty of functionality. These houses were often very small, so it was important to maximize the space and create a welcoming environment after a long day of work.
4 key elements that make a home farmhouse style are:
- Rustic Colors: The colors are normally more muted and blend well together. This allows you to add pops of colors into your home, but not be overwhelmed by the color.
- Clean Spaces: All furniture and home décor work together to make the home look and feel cleaner. Décor items like blanket ladders get blankets off the couch or floors and free up room. Another great example is an egg carton. Egg cartons do a great job of getting the bulky Styrofoam egg containers out of the refrigerator and making it easier to organize your food.
- Added Home Décor: Everyone’s farmhouse style is a little different. There is a coastal rustic (beachy farmhouse,) modern farmhouse and so many more. The items you add, and the small pops of color give your space your personal touch.
Overall, the farmhouse style is a much simpler way to decorate a home. It is much more comforting and cozier, especially for families that get overwhelmed by clutter.
